Scope: This article reads NITA’s public Recognition of Prior Learning explanation, checked on 29 October 2026. It does not determine anyone’s qualification level or describe an application route as currently available.
The page describes identifying, assessing and certifying knowledge, skills and attitudes gained in different settings. It distinguishes identifying learning, collecting and presenting evidence, and assessment and validation. These are related stages, not interchangeable words for a qualification already awarded.
A claimed skill is not the same record as its assessment
Someone’s account of experience can identify a topic for assessment. Evidence might support the account, while an assessment concerns how that evidence relates to stated outcomes or standards. Merely describing a skill does not establish an institution’s decision.
This is a reading distinction, not a list of accepted evidence. The page’s general description cannot tell this article whether one person’s photographs, work samples or years of experience meet the requirements for a particular qualification.
Keep four labels in the research note
| Label | Question it answers |
|---|---|
| Experience described | What learning is being claimed? |
| Evidence identified | What material supports that description? |
| Assessment record | What was actually assessed against which stated standard? |
| Award record | What qualification, if any, did an authorised body record? |
For example, a project description might mention practical experience but provide no assessment result. A writer should preserve that gap rather than calling the person certified. Conversely, a certificate description should not be expanded into a prediction that the holder will find work.
Do not treat rollout language as current instructions
NITA’s page also discusses policy and rollout context. This article does not use that material to decide today’s legal powers, trade-test progression, recognised level, assessment-centre status or intake conditions. A general explanation and current qualification requirements are different document tasks.
Nor does it establish fees, processing time or the precise route applicable to an individual. No portfolio was submitted or evaluated, and no application or certificate was issued in preparing this article.
What this limited reading contributes
The useful distinction is between an account of learning, its supporting evidence and an actual institutional assessment or award. It helps describe records accurately without judging the person or replacing professional assessment.
Current rules, approved centres, qualification-specific requirements and legal applicability remain unverified. This article offers no eligibility decision, certification guarantee or job promise, and it does not waive the need for appropriate review before those substantive subjects are reported.
